Swim around Aphrodite's Rock in Cyprus - a great holiday destination for May

Just 5 hours from the UK, Cyprus has balmy temperatures of 26 degrees in May and 10 hours of sunshine - making it warmer and sunnier than the Canary Islands! So, May is a great month for couples to head to this holiday destination which happens to be the third-largest Mediterranean island!

Sunbed warriors are spoilt for choice. There's the 500 metre white sandy Nissi Beach near party capital Ayia Napa and also picturesque Fig Tree Bay near Protaras which is also a great spot to indulge in water sports like parasailing or windsurfing.

If you fancy a day away from the beach, then why not take a jeep safari into the Troodos Mountains? It's also home to Mount Olympus so you could well enjoy cooler temperatures. For culture-vultures, take a trip to the Tombs of the Kings, a world heritage site that's just over a mile north of Paphos harbour. This fascinating underground monument that dates back to the 4th century BC is carved out of solid rocks. And, finally, you can't visit Cyprus without swimming around Aphrodite's Rock, which, if legend is to be believed brings good luck and youth.

When holidaying in Bali in May, couples should head on a day trip to the paddy fields
Head to Bali for a long-haul holiday destination in May

May is a great time to head to Bali, as it's the start of the dry season and there's lower rainfall. With temperatures of around 28 degrees, May is a quieter month so the beaches are less busy and the hotels typically offer good deals.

If you're looking to do a little more than lie on one of Bali's beautiful beaches, here are some top ideas of things to do in Bali.

  • Tegalalang Rice Terraces are 20 minutes north of Ubud. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a photographers dream. Capture the undulating layers of rice paddies that are kept alive by the ancient, yet sophisticated irrigation systems.

  • Nyang Nyang Beach in Uluwatu has white sands that border lush greenery-lined cliffs. A welcome respite to listen to the waves lapping the shore.

  • Mount Batur is home to Bali's largest crater lake. Beautiful and serene, it's a great place for hiking and cycling.

Whale watching to hot springs - head to Iceland this May!

Gulfoss Waterfalls in Iceland - go on holiday in May to enjoy this magical natural wonder
If you're a couple holidaying in Iceland in May, take part in the Golden Triangle Tour that includes Gulfoss Waterfalls

We visited Iceland many years ago over the Spring Bank Holiday weekend so it's a place we wholeheartedly recommend. As midsummer approaches, May is a great time to visit although we found it a strange experience witnessing sunshine at midnight! Temperatures are starting to warm up but we recommend taking some layers, especially if you head out to explore. Reykjavik is a great base for a short stay and here is what you can easily do from the capital city:

Go Whale Watching - and the chances of spotting some marine life is pretty high. Pick up a tour from Reykjavik.

Blue Lagoon Spa - Iceland's most famous spa with healing silica mud and warm, soothing water (albeit with a sulphur / rotten egg aroma, which you soon get used to).

Golden Circle - if time is tight, pick up a trip to visit the main highlights of this breathtaking country. It's a popular and easy sightseeing route that takes in Thingvellir National Park, Haukadalur Geothermal Valley (where the ground literally bubbles!) and the majestically beautiful Gullfoss Waterfall.
