June marks the start of the Greek summer. Miles of sand and clear warm waters make snorkelling and diving a great option. It's a great time to visit the islands before the crowds. So why not head to beautiful Santorini, Crete, Corfu, Rhodes or Halkidiki?

June is also the time when lots of festivals typically take place. The Athens and Epidavros Festival showcases performances like Greek plays in ancient and modern venues beginning in June and lasting throughout the summer.

If sailing is your thing, you will typically pay lower prices and it'll give you a chance to see the islands when they're lush, green and flowers are in bloom.

June is the perfect time to visit the islands scattered up and down the east coast of Malaysia. The hot, dry weather and clear waters gives way to fantastic diving conditions in the waters of Tioman or Redang. Kuala Lumpur is a great stopover for a couple of nights. It will give you time to acclimatize to the temperatures and humidity.

Traders Hotel is a great place to stay in KL. Some rooms have great views of the majestic Petronas Twin Towers - the 451m-tall glass and steel-clad skyscrapers which have a public skybridge and observation deck.

You could combine a visit to Borneo whilst in this part of the world (more on Borneo below).

In June, the long rains have ended. Zanzibar's beaches are the epitome of powder white sand and turquoise waters. Tour Stone Town - the oldest part of Zanzibar city. The architecture mostly dates back to the 19th century and reflects the Swahili culture with Arabian, Persian, Indian and European elements.

Stone Town was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Combine a stay with a safari on Tanzania's mainland. Check out Audley Travel, Kuoni or Africa Safari for details of tours and hotels.

A great way to take in the scenery is taking a train journey. Their single track railways travel through mountains, along the coastline and stopping at quaint villages too.

Mauritius

Although officially the start of Winter, June is actually a great month to visit the beautiful Indian Ocean island of Mauritius.

It's a pleasant mid 20° C in the daytime, and around 18° C in the evening (so you may wish to pack a jumper or light jacket).

There's so much to do here. Take a catamaran trip around the northern islands and inlets, visit the Botanic Gardens in Pamplemousses (the oldest in the southern hemisphere). Visit Trou aux Cerfs, a dormant volcano in the south of the island or the Black River Gorges National Park with it's picture postcard views and waterfalls.

The long, warm days make June an excellent month to visit Canada. It's less crowded. The waterways are fully thawed and the snow has melted - even up in the North West Territories.

This time of year is also perfect for whale watching on the Atlantic coast, with humpbacks, minkes and belugas frequently sighted.

It's an adventurers dream: hiking, kayaking and more. Canadian cities are also fantastic places to explore: Montreal hosts the world's largest Jazz Festival each June and it's the month that Canada hosts the Grand Prix.

Budapest

This is a great place for a short break - it's one of our favourite European capital cities. Budapest is a city of two halves, divided by the Danube river. If you want culture, head to the Buda side of the city for the castle, cobbled streets and exceptional high quality restaurants (many Michelin accredited).

For nightlife and shopping, then stay in Pest. A visit to a thermal spa is also a must-do (some are same-sex, some communal). It also has a great food market but check out more about that here. On a warm, sunny day there’s nowhere better than sitting by the banks of the Danube in a cafe or bar, enjoying a leisurely lunch and watching the world go by.

You could combine a trip to Borneo with Malaysia. Average temperature in June is 29° C. Borneo is home to one of the most beautiful and fascinating animals - the orangutan. The trees start to fruit in June so the orangutans start to come out in the Wild Sabah forest to pick up these tasty treats.

Borneo is just one of the two places that orangutans still live in the wild. Alternatively, visit Sepilok Orangutan Sanctuary - it's possible to stay at Sepilok Nature Reserve which is a few minutes walk from the sanctuaries.
