Habitas, AlUla, Saudi Arabia

Now, this destination may come as a bit of a surprise. Saudi Arabia announced it was opening their doors to tourists back in Autumn 2019. But, due to the pandemic, the country promptly closed them again. There are a number of luxury hotel brands that are rushing to be amongst the first to open in the northwestern desert area, but, Habitas will be the one that's ready first. They are betting on a boom and plan to be ready for when Saudi Arabia's doors re-open!

What makes it special: The location is stunning - Habitats AlUla is located amongst large sandstone canyons. It is also in close proximity to Hegra, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The entire resort will be free of single-use plastics. Much of the power will be supplied by solar panels making it an ethical, sustainable resort.

When will it open: The desert camp should open in Spring 2021.

Rooms: There will be 100 luxury 'capsules' to choose from. A bit like IKEA, these (essentially flat-packed) capsules are made from laminated wood, aluminum, and other light-on-the-planet materials and constructed at site.

Eating: The restaurant will put Middle Eastern cuisine into the spotlight.

What else: There's a real focus on Middle Eastern wellness so expect a large centre (complete with spa treatments and yoga sessions) as well as a large outdoor pool.
