Trenchers, Whitby

On a recent visit to Whitby, I took a step back in time to my early teens by visiting Trenchers.

Trenchers was established in 1980 and I think I visited around 1983. As a wide-eyed very naive youngster this restaurant was next-level. It was glam. It was super-shiny. Back then, I felt so sophisticated sat in a booth with my glass of coca-cola (another real treat). I truly believe at that young age, Trenchers opened my eyes to the world of eating out and a desire for eating really great food (being a food blogger obviously wasn't a thing in the mid-80's).

So revisiting Trenchers on a recent trip to Whitby brought back many treasured childhood memories. Trenchers is the UK winner of the Best Fish & Chip Restaurant at the National Fish & Chip Awards 2019. So a trip back in time and eating at an award-winning restaurant, what more could we ask for.

You'll find the Trenchers restaurant on Whitby's harbour side. They operate on a first-come, first-served basis so at busy times, you may have to wait in line for a table. You can make a reservation if you're with a large party, otherwise you have to stand in a (socially distanced) line. Don't want to wait? You can eat on-the-go from their takeaway next door.

So what's on the menu?

Eating at Trenchers really did leave a lasting impression and I could still remember what I ate all those years ago so perusing the menu was easy. It had to be Whitby Scampi with Chips and garden peas. But, to give you a feel of what else is on offer, there's a wide choice of starters with the likes of fresh crab, calamari or home-made fishcakes. Mains include cod or haddock (available in small, medium or large) along with fish pie, fresh salmon. Non fish-eaters are also catered for with dishes such as lasagne, steak pie, vegan burger, sandwiches, salads or baguettes. If you can manage dessert (believe me you would be very hungry if you did), it's all retro classics like chocolate fudge cake, sherry trifle, cheesecake etc.

There's also a dedicated kids menu for under 14's.

I wasn't disappointed. Service was efficient. Food was piping hot, tasty and of great quality. Highly recommended, even after all these years.
